Google Tag Manager: managing tracking without code
GTM is a free tool you add to your site once and then manage every tracking code (GA4, Meta Pixel, Google Ads and others) from one interface. The marketing team can set up new events without waiting for a developer.

What is Google Tag Manager?
GTM sits between your site and your tracking tools. Only one GTM snippet goes on the site; every other tag is added from the interface. A trigger decides when each tag fires, and variables decide what data it sends.
The most important part is the dataLayer: the structured data the site passes to GTM. With a well-written dataLayer agreement with the developer, e-commerce, form and user events become reliable.
What GTM makes possible
Centralised tags
All tracking codes in one place, with one version history.
Event tracking
Click, form, scroll and video events without code.
E-commerce dataLayer
Passing product, cart and purchase events.
Consent Mode
Tag behaviour that follows user consent.
Preview and testing
Checking a change before it goes live.
Server-side tagging
More accurate, privacy-friendly data collection.

Questions about GTM
Is GTM free?
Yes, standard GTM is free. The server-side option adds server costs.
Does GTM slow the site down?
Set up properly, the impact is minimal. Slowness usually comes from unnecessary and outdated tags.
What is the dataLayer?
It is the structured data layer the site passes to GTM: product name, price, user status and so on.
What is the difference between GTM and GA4?
GA4 collects and analyses data. GTM is the tool that sends that data to GA4 and other tools.
